Spotlight on Spanish Translator/Interpreter Rosalie Wells
Rosalie has been working with LSC for more than a decade as a Spanish translator, and has recently provided webinar interpreting as well. Her use of computer-aided translation tools such as SDL Trados, Multiterm, WordFast and others, has helped her ensure the consistency and high standards that LSC expects from every job. Being able to work directly in DTP programs such as Quark, PageMaker, InDesign and Illustrator makes Rosalie a great asset to LSC. In addition to being our "go-to" expert on developments in language technology, we admire Rosalie's dedication and enthusiasm in all she does.
Rosalie Wells is an ATA-certified English to Spanish translator who has made her living translating for more than 28 years. Born in Morelia, Mexico, she was raised by an American mother and a Mexican father in Mexico City until she moved to the U.S. at age 18. She explains her roots as a translator and how things have changed over the years:

Webinar on National Medical Interpreting Standards
Today, LSC participated in a 90-minute webinar offered through the IMIA. Speaker Cindy Roat, MPH, and Chair of the Standards, Training and Certification Committee of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care, discussed why the standards were developed, what the standards are, and what their impact will be. Included were such topics as the challenges of setting up the standards; content including information about interpreter knowledge and skills; and important interpreter and interpreter trainer qualifications. The participants submitted thought-provoking questions such as the future of interpreter training, and how likely it would be that more of this can be done via webinar or online versus in a classroom or on-site setting. Ms. Roat responded that since interaction and feedback are so important in this type of training, on-site is sometimes a better alternative. However, there is a lot of interest in online learning due to its convenience and easy accessibility.

Why Bilinguals Are Smarter

The New York Times recently published an article examining new scientific studies about bilingualism and brain function. From childhood to old age, bilinguals excelled over monolinguals in various tests. All the more reason to contact LSC about starting to learn a new language!

The Importance of Being Bilingual and Bicultural
In a recent article in this week’s Philadelphia Inquirer, the importance of being bilingual and bicultural is examined. According to a study by the University of Florida, ”it was found that fully bilingual Hispanics earn an average of nearly $7,000 more per year than their peers who speak only English,” and that “corporations cannot find enough fully proficient bilingual employees."

IRS Multilingual Gateway Offers Online Help in Other Languages
If you speak English as a second language, the IRS online Multilingual Gateway may be a good alternative for you to get the information you need to file your federal tax return. The Gateway provides basic federal income tax information in Chinese, Korean, Russian, Vietnamese and Spanish.
The Multilingual Gateway offers expanded online language services to individuals, small businesses and international taxpayers. Embedded links allow you to obtain tax filing information and products in your native language.
